Alcoholism is one of the major problems faced by the poor families of the country, where in the earning member spends his entire earnings for the day sometimes on drinking arrack, a local concoction of alcoholic beverage. In fact, the coastal Karnataka boasts of highest liquor sales. The poor people in this region make offerings of liquor in various rituals performed by them and therefore consumption of alcoholic beverages is an accepted practice.

This however has a telling effect on the socio-economic fabric of the affected family. the SKDRDP realised that without a check on the alcoholism, whatever be the initiatives will go away as waste. As Dr. Heggade says, "alcoholism is like hole in a bucket". In order to achieve the real meaning of development, the SKDRDP promotes community efforts of anti alcoholic movement and conducting scientific deaddiction programmes.

It is an attitude changing exercise through awareness camps, village level meets, school campaigns, women education, informal but scientific deaddiction camps.     

The deaddiction camp conducted in the local community halls and schools would be of ten days duration where, the addicts are treated medically and through counseling. The family members of the patients are also counseled to take care of the deaddicted. The religious sentiments are used as a strong tool against alcoholism. Daily prayers, family bhajans, community prayers are organized and encouraged.

·         Create awareness against alcoholic abuse. 

·         Motivate people to progress without liquor consumption.

·         Prevent youngsters from falling pray to alcoholic consumption.

The project has established a separate forum to fight against alcoholic abuse in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada Districts. The forum called as Janajagruthi has presently promoted 862 New Life Committees which are working in 641 villages. Ten regional committees are working with 3,200 volunteers Who are actively involved in Janajagruthi forum.
