For ages, Dharmasthala has been supporting community initiatives through matching grant support. A focused programme to create and develop rural assets was taken up in 1990, entitled  "The Community Development Project", a wing of the SKDRDP, was launched to assist the community efforts for creation of community infrastructure. Today, the project covers the whole state under this programme emphasizing mainly on education, rural infrastructure, and improvement of crematoriums.

The Hindu Rudrabhoomi Project (Crematorium) is one such initiative.  This unique programme has been evolved with in an effort to make the last journey of all the human beings in a dignified way. The programme supports the local community in renovating the existing crematoriums with latest body burning chambers made up of silicon. As against the conventional firewood requirement of 800 Kgs, to burn a human body, the silicon chambers will do with as little as 250 Kgs. The project also helps the community in developing the required infrastructure in the crematoriums like water, bathrooms, shelter for the burning chamber, a forestation of the premises, fencing etc. The project besides providing the engineering support, also meets financial requirements of up to Rs. 100,000/-
