SKDRDP has been selected to implement a special SGSY project in Dakshina Kannada (D.K.) District. The three year project commenced in the year 2003 is a long term collaboration between the Zilla Panchayat and the SKDRDP. The project aims at bringing 30% of the total below poverty line (BPL) population in D. K. district above the poverty line in three years. 1265 groups will be identified comprising of 11165 members. These families will be facilitated to take up agro, service or product based activities as income generating activities. The required infrastructure and the linkage support is being developed for the purpose.
The project has adopted farm sector as well as non-farm sector activities, which are correlated with each other for income generation. The project has proposed to assist the selected families to earn a minimum of Rs. 24000 /- pa. in the next three years. The important objectives are:

Review of existing Self help Groups formed under SGSY scheme in DK district.

Strengthen the existing Self help Groups through need-based trainings for capacity building and skill development.

Select key activities for starting the income generation activities, develop the infrastructure
required and facilitate the existing SHGs start income generation activities.

Promote new Self help Groups having members from the BPL sector to be brought under SGSY program.

Promote production of fast moving chemical goods, food products, handicrafts and garment manufacturing along with agro-based activities. Create a brand image for these products and create suitable market.
To socially and economically empower the families to be brought under the scheme.

The project is operational in 39 slums of 6 cities namely
Mangalore, Ullal, Udupi, Kundapur, Sirsi and covering 20684
families,257 SHGs were formed this year with the total no
of SHGs reaching 1637. striving to improve the standard
of living of the slum dwellers the project focuses mainly
on the health and education sector. To develop overall socio
economic status of the target community various programmes
are devised.
