Managing the wastes generated from the houses, workplaces, business establishments are a challenge in towns. As per the SWM Act 2000, the wastes need to be segregated into wet and dry, degradable and non degraddable and disposed off separately. House to house colletion of solid wastes and introduction of bin less system in towns has been advocated.
Due to success of implementation of LCS construction project the KUIDFC has requested SKDRDP to implement Solid Waste Management Project an important component of KUIDFC .

Keeping in view of the governmental and Supreme Court directions, the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC), made elaborate plans for primary collection of the waste from the door steps of the generator and dispose it off as per their degradability. for this purpose a soid waste management programme (SWM) has been devised. under this programme, the selected SHGs promoted by the NGOs, would be entrusted with the responsibility of primary collection. For this purpose the SHGs will be assisted with the latest transport equipments. They will be trained on handling of wastes and their primary disposal. Necessary fees will be collected from the house holds for the disposal work, which makes this self-sustainable.

During the year pilot studies were conducted at Puttur and Sirsi towns, with the help of SHGs promoted by SKDRDP, under KUIDFC programme. the project has initial teething problems mainly on account of delayed policy decisions, non cooperation from the waste generators.
